What every adult ESL teacher needs to know about bilingualism
Teachers of adult immigrants need to be knowledgeable about bilingualism for a number of reasons. On the one hand, their adult students are becoming bilingual or multilingual as they add English to their existing linguistic repertoire. This perspective may help learners value their developing language abilities rather than feeling negative about not speaking English ‘perfectly’. Equally important is the need for immigrant parents to access accurate information about heritage language maintenance for the purposes of “family language planning”. In this presentation, I will provide a brief summary of some important insights about bilingualism that teachers need to be aware of and highlight a few useful resources for learning more about this topic.
Hope to see you there!
