Language, Culture, and Voice: The Role of Identity Texts
Mar 19, 2025
5- 6 PM - Online - Tutela - All Welcome!
Presenter: Elsie Johnson
Description: Join LINC Literacy instructor Elsie Johnson as she shares how identity texts help learners connect language with their personal and cultural stories. By engaging with identity texts—a concept that encourages learners to use language as a means of exploring and sharing their personal stories, experiences, and cultural backgrounds—participants will enhance their English language skills while developing a deeper connection to their own identities. The work of Cummins and Early (2011) has shown that identity texts have a positive influence on student learning as well as student self-image. Elsie is very excited to demonstrate a variety of identity text techniques that can be used across all CLB levels; from Foundations to Stage 2. These techniques will bring personal and cultural narratives to life, making them more authentic, engaging, and meaningful.
