Let’s Talk About Learner Investment in Language Learning

What if learning English isn’t just about language skills, but about who learners are becoming through that process?

In this session, Heather Imorde will explore the concept of learner investment and how students’ learning is shaped by their identities, sense of belonging, and the value they derive from classroom interactions. She will share the theoretical background behind investment theory and connect it to practical classroom examples that show how teachers can create spaces where learners feel recognized and empowered.

Discussion Questions:

  1. How do you incorporate multilingualism in your classroom?
  2. Whose voices and experiences are most visible in your classroom, and how couldyou widen that space?
  3. What does it sound like when learners are invested? What does it look like? How doyou know when something isn’t working?
