LINC Classroom Assistant

Organization: ASSIST Community Services Centre
Location: Edmonton Southwest Office (820 Saddleback Road)
Compensation: Commensurate with skills
End Date: May 18, 2018

Hours of Work: 30 hours per week

About ASSIST: ASSIST Community Services Centre has provided settlement support to newcomers since 1977. Our Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program is a federally funded program providing immigrants and refugees with the English language and cultural skills necessary for life in Canada.

We offer a variety of full‐time and part‐time classes in downtown and southwest Edmonton. We strongly value a diverse and multilingual workforce. This position reports to the LINC Program Coordinator.

Position Summary: The LINC Classroom Assistant is responsible for assisting LINC students and teachers in the classroom.

 Follow teachers’ instructions and plans to work with students one on one or in small groups

 Lead conversation/discussion groups

 Assist with Portfolio Based Language Assessments (PBLA)

 Assist in preparation of learning materials and environment

 Find and/or create materials (handouts, video or audio recordings, pictures, etc.)

 Operate audio‐visual and electronic equipment

 Help instructors and students use technology (computer labs, tablets, etc.)

 Accompany LINC Instructors and students on field trips and other school outings

 Help instructors to create a positive learning environment in the classroom

 Attend ASSIST events and staff meetings

 Other duties as assigned by the supervisor


 Some post‐secondary education or experience in Education, ESL or a related field required

 Some experience teaching, training, tutoring, or coaching required

 Experience with multi‐cultural clientele, especially those with limited English skills

 Highly proficient in spoken and written English; an additional language strongly preferred

 Service‐oriented approach to helping clients and students

 Advanced computer skills and able to quickly learn new computer skills
