PBLA Lead Instructor

About ASSIST: ASSIST Community Services Centre is a local, community-based organization that has provided settlement support to newcomers since 1977.  The Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program at ASSIST is a federally funded program that provides immigrants and refugees with English language and cultural skills that are necessary for daily life in Canada.

Position Summary: Within the board guidelines of Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, this position is responsible for supporting LINC Instructors and Administration in understanding and implementing the expectations of Portfolio-Based Language Assessment, as well as providing required reports and documentation to the Program Manager.

This position reports to the LINC Program Manager.

Key responsibilities are as follows:

•       Deliver workshops related to PBLA and related changes to colleagues

•       Observe teachers and provide PBLA feedback/suggestions as a peer

•       Deliver binder orientations to new students

•       Support teachers with PBLA topics (CLB, TBLT, activities, assessments, planning, portfolio evidence, etc.)

•       Facilitate sharing and discussions between teachers

•       Team-teach on occasion

•       Support orientation and training of new teachers to PBLA

•       Observe and document teachers’ PBLA progress and submit quarterly reports to the Manager

•       Assist program manager in planning and implementing professional development

•       Provide input to program manager when staff is evaluated

•       Inform program manager of needs and trends both as related to staff and students

•       Take over a teacher’s class so the teacher can undertake assessments or interviews

•       Give demonstration lessons

•       Communicate with program manager and inform of any concerns encountered

•       Participate in meetings with other lead teachers

•       Maintain an inventory of Language Companion binders and inserts

Qualifications and Skills:

•       PBLA Lead Instructor Certification from the Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks (CCLB) or eligible to be certified by the CCLB through Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

•       TESL certified from a program recognized by TESL Canada

•       Three or more years of experience in a government funded adult ESL/LINC program in Canada (minimum 32 weeks using PBLA in the classroom)

•       Knowledge and experience in using the CLB, TBLT, PBLA and Essential Skills

•       Able to accurately place students according to the National Language Placement and Progression Guidelines

•       Experience teaching in a variety of CLB levels and/or contexts

•       Experience providing professional support to colleagues, (e.g. mentoring, PD workshops, etc.)

•       Experience using (and willing to learn) various modes of digital technologies for communicating, e.g. Skype, web conferencing, email, etc.

•       Computer literate in Word, Excel, Power Point

•       Demonstrated excellence in teaching

•       Enthusiasm for teaching and learning

•       Leadership skills

•       Excellent command of English and effective communication skills

•       Good problem-solving skills

•       Organized and creative

•       Able to work with volunteers, practicum and summer students

•       Able to develop lesson plans and assessment tasks that span several levels

Note: Candidates selected for an interview will be asked to provide samples of lesson plans.

ASSIST’s LINC program offers full and part-time classes from two locations: full-time classes at our downtown office, and part-time classes at our southwest office (morning, afternoon, and evening). Candidates must be able to travel to two locations and must be available to work at various times of day.   ASSIST offers flexibility and a supportive working environment.
