for Canadian Language Benchmarks and Portfolio Based Language Assessment

This section includes resources (lesson plans, curriculum, readings, videos, podcasts, etc.) to use in class.

Modules are designed for the following levels: Foundation Literacy–CLB1, CLB 2/3, CLB 4/5. They include lesson plans, activities, handouts, assessment tasks, and some online resources.

This resource includes reproducible language learning activities organized by 12 common LINC themes. PDFs and audios can be downloaded for LINC 1, 2, 3, and 4.

This hub includes the following resources:

  • Tool 1: Assessment Templates
  • Tool 2: Instructor administered templates (a collection of CLB 4-7 assessments and templates for use in LINC programs that use Portfolio-Based Language Instruction)

  • Tool 4: Self Assessments (a collection of self-assessment tools for CLB 4-7).

The resource includes ready-made module packages for CLB 1–2, CLB 3–4, and CLB 5–6. Each package includes the following:

  • Skill-using tasks
  • Needs assessments and learner reflections

This resource includes Can Do Statements for CLB 4-10. These statements have a workplace/employment focus.

This comprehensive rubric generating tool reduces the time instructors spend creating assessments aligned to the CLB. The rubrics incorporate competency statements, indicators, profiles of ability, and features of communication. They also include sample tasks.

This toolkit serves as a companion document to the Formative Assessment Toolkit. It helps instructors when conducting assessments for learning, monitoring learner progress, and making decisions about future learning objectives. This resource includes self-assessment activities for literacy to CLB 7.

This resource includes best practices for formative and self-assessment as well as CLB-referenced tools for teacher assessment, self/peer-assessment and reflection tools for Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.

LISTN. (2015). Classroom assessment toolkit. (Download from Tutela.ca)

This resource includes learning modules (CLB 1 & 1L to CLB 7) on 8 different topics. Although designed for face-to-face instruction, these can be adapted for online delivery. The resource includes module plans, skill-building, skill-using, and assessments.

To access these materials, go to tutela.ca and click on Collections. Search for OCDSB and you will find the 5 Real World Task Bank collections housing all of their modules and tasks. The collections are separated by level. Inside the collections they are grouped by theme. Modules are listed at the beginning before the tasks.

Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. (2020). Real world assessment task bank modules. (Access through Tutela.ca)

This collection includes multi-level modules for the following CLB levels: 3–4, 4–5, 5–6, 7–8. Each module includes the following:

  • A module plan
  • A list of resources
  • Ideas for skill building/using activities
  • Assessment tasks with Google Form links and answer keys.

This resource includes reproducible language learning activities for LINC 5–7 learners.

Volume 1 includes chapters on academic skills, business writing, interacting with others, and looking for a job. Volume 2 includes chapters on managing information (reading), meetings, and telephone calls. Audio files can also be downloaded.
