Dealing with pronunciation assessment in the second language classroom: Issues, approaches, and tips

Summary: This session will look at some of the issues instructors may face when trying to assess pronunciation. We will talk about how pronunciation is related to general speaking assessment, and challenges around working with guidelines and curricula when assessing pronunciation in different types of programs in Alberta. It will also include common approaches and tips you can use for making decisions around pronunciation assessment. This session includes a presentation but will also have interactive and discussion components.
Presenter Bio: Dr. Jennifer A. Foote is an Associate Professor at the University of Alberta in the TESL Program. Her research interests include instructor and learner beliefs around second language pronunciation and exploring issues around ethics in pronunciation instruction. She is passionate about connecting research to practice.
