Integrating Anti-Racism Principles in EAL Teaching Practices

This workshop is designed to provide EAL practitioners with the knowledge, tools, and strategies to incorporate anti-racism principles into their teaching and tutoring approaches proactively. The central aim is to equip participants with the skills needed to confront and dismantle racism within the classroom context.
In this workshop, participants will dive into the impact of racism on language learning and, by extension, learners' overall educational experiences. Furthermore, participants will navigate the complexities of acknowledging and addressing systemic racism in the education system while fostering a commitment to equity and social justice.
During this interactive session, participants will be equipped with practical strategies and a deeper understanding of integrating anti-racism principles into their teaching practices. They will be better prepared to create welcoming and supportive spaces where learners from diverse backgrounds feel valued, seen, respected, and empowered.
Note that this is a condensed version of a 3-hour workshop series. This webinar shall be delivered online.

Meet our amazing presenters!
Lia dela Cruz has been an ELT practitioner in Edmonton for 13 years, having taught ESL courses in MacEwan and NorQuest College. In the Philippines, she was also a teacher trainer, providing professional development to teachers in rural areas outside Manila, a role she is now reprising in Alberta as a Regional Advisor with NorQuest College’s Alberta Routes Initiative. As part of the team, she provides professional development to English language instructors, tutors, and other members of the community adult learning network to support their English language programs. At home in winter, she enjoys cooking for her family, curling up with a good book, and counting down the days till spring arrives.
Alana Johnson is the Lead for the Alberta Routes Initiative. Alana has over 25 years of experience with providing engaging and meaningful training and leadership for a broad range of audiences. She worked for many years as an English language instructor, and an essential skills specialist. For the past 8 years Alana has provided professional development support and services with Alberta Routes. When not at work, you can find Alana hiking up a mountain, walking her dogs in the coulees of southern Alberta, and spending time with her family.
