Edmonton Professional Development - Feb.22.

2nd Floor Meeting Room 2-4

Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers

11713 82 Street NW, Edmonton, AB T5B 2V9

Agenda:

How can teaching Canadian newcomers prepare you for teaching in refugee camps? How can camp experience change your approach to teaching LINC? This presentation will address John’s experience teaching middle schoolers (grades 8 and 9) at Palestinian refugee camps in south Lebanon. He will discuss how this experience prepared him for teaching in the LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) program. A discussion will follow the presentation.

Over the past two decades, John Doyle has been the Centre for International Business Studies’ Program Director, at the University of Alberta. Earlier, he led international exchanges in BC for Canada World Youth, and managed a translation bureau in East Vancouver. During the past five years, John made a gradual shift over to teaching. At the outset, he on occasion taught students in the U of A’s Bridging Program, or coached temporary foreign workers preparing for CELPIP. Then, he more regularly began to teach newcomers, in LINC classes at the Mennonite Centre.
