September 23: Accept It, Change it or Leave it! Mindfully Navigating Challenges in Academic Settings

Description: Over the course of the COVID Pandemic, online education became a standard platform for ESL teachers in Alberta to facilitate learning. Students in ESL programs not only acquired language and digital literacy skills but also had a virtual community to sustain them during periods of social isolation. The rapid shift to online education; however, also has created new challenges for teachers. Specifically, the workload of most teachers has become heavier than ever, and there are less opportunities to connect and collaborate with colleagues. At this juncture, many teachers have been left feeling disillusioned, frustrated, and exhausted. This session offers a simple strategy, coupled with a range of contemplative practices, to help teachers navigate the challenges being faced in current academic settings and retain a love and passion for teaching. Attendees are encouraged to dress in comfortable, loose clothing and to bring a yoga mat, pillow, and blanket to reap the full benefits of this workshop.

Presenter Bio: Krista Schwabl has been a teacher for thirty years; ten of those years were spent teaching ESL in the LINC program at NorQuest College. In 2016, she completed a year-long Mindfulness for Educators Certificate online. Many of the contemplative practices she learned by participating in this certificate program have profoundly transformed her teaching practice (and life). Krista is passionate about sharing these practices with others who seek alternative ways to foster health and wellness.
