Agenda:

Are Online Grammar Materials Any Good?

In this presentation, we present the results from a class project in a TESL course at the University of Alberta in Fall 2020. Students were given the task of examining the characteristics of online grammar materials in order to evaluate their quality.

Pooling together the results from all class members, the overall picture confirmed

the expectation that online grammar explanations are decontextualized and

grammar practice is generally written and involves mostly limited responses. While

this type of grammar material has its place, the dominance of highly controlled

written practice exercises severely limits their learning potential. Given the

increased emphasis on web-based delivery of ESL instruction, ESL teachers need to be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the kinds of materials that students interact with online.
