May 21, 2025
Time: 4:30 - 5:30 pm
Location: Online
Description:
Field trips play an important role when motivating students in Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada. They offer intensive real- world experiences that improve language acquisition and cultural understanding. In addition, excursions can strengthen the sense of community and belonging among newcomers, besides motivating them to participate in their learning.
This presentation is a collaborative effort by LINC teachers, both at the foundation level (literacy) and Stage one (CLB 1). We decided to use Field trips as a tool for bridging the gap in oral communication that our students often encounter in their daily activities in the real world. Field trips play an important role when motivating students in Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada.
Participating in Field trips offers invaluable benefits beyond the experiences of sightseeing. They contribute to the personal and academic growth of each participant. They offer intensive real- world experiences that improve language acquisition and cultural understanding. Field Trips give opportunities for practical application of language skills in authentic contexts, supporting student engagement and retention.
Our students strive to express themselves hence the use of Field trips as a motivational tool for enhancing this skill. The exposure to English language outside the classroom boosts confidence and communication abilities. In this presentation, we will demonstrate the process of preparation for the participating students and the practical outcome of these trips on our students.
