Literacy Event: Let's Talk About

May 20, 2021

Introducing “Let’s Talk About…”

We literacy teachers encounter challenges and paradoxes unique to our classroom. How many times have you finished a class and thought “how on earth did that fall into chaos?” How often have you said to your colleagues, “yeah, but they’re literacy” when they offer helpful suggestions about activities and assessments? How often have you wanted to talk to your fellow literacy teachers to share ideas, get new inspiration or just remind yourself that you’re not the only one?

Let’s Talk About… is a new series sponsored by ATESL Advocacy and the Literacy Centre of Expertise.

On the third Thursday of each month we will host a 45 minute chat, open to all literacy teachers or teachers interested in literacy. Sessions will kick off conversation with a topic chosen by the
host of the month. However, these sessions are primarily meant to provide a space for support and idea sharing among professional colleagues, so they will be very informal.

Our first session will be on Thursday, May 20 at 4:00 through Zoom.
It will be hosted by Jess Legacy from CARE. She will talk about demonstrating asynchronous work through screen recordings and other tips for getting students to do homework.
Please email Jess for the Zoom meeting link at: Jess Legacy

Future topics will include:
● Hybrid classroom
● Reading resources
● Show and tell
● Phonics
● Digital literacy
● Should we teach grammar and how much?
● Demographics in the institution/classroom

If you have any questions, please email Jess, and she'll get back to you!
Tell your friends! Come with coffee or a post-work cocktail. Hope to see you there!
