Literacy Instructor Morning (PBLA Lead Rotation-Starting Jan 2026)

Compensation: Hourly $30 - $50
Start Date: 2 Sep 2025

Hours: 30.5 (8 Prep & 22.5 Instructional) hours/per week
Schedule: Monday-Friday(Daytime/Morning)

**This position entails two roles that are staggered in an 8-month rotation.
September 2025 will be in the instructor role, with the PBLA Lead Instructor role starting January 2026. The PBLA Lead Instructor position is 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8:30am - 5:30pm with an hourly rate of $39.80 per hour.

PRIMARY FOCUS/OVERALL ACCOUNTABILITY:
Provide PBLA training, guidance, mentoring, and support to instructors, colleagues, the program, and students to fulfill ECSD LINC’s mandate.

PBLA LEAD INSTRUCTOR: JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES:

OPERATIONS

1. Adhere to all ECSD LINC policies and procedures.

2. Practice cultural awareness, sensitivity, and respect in the workplace.

3. Adhere to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) with respect to students’ and employee’s personal information.

4. Establish a welcoming, safe and positive learning atmosphere for students.

5. Ensure that you are informed of the Crisis Management plan for the LINC site.

TRAINING

6. Meet one on one with instructors once a session for a minimum of 1 hour to discuss PBLA-related topics (including CLB alignment, TBLT and Literacy matters), monitor progress, and provide feedback/suggestions as a peer.

7. Plan/facilitate CCLB Professional Learning Sessions in conjunction with the Site Coordinators and/or the Academic Director.

INSTRUCTOR SUPPORT

8. Meet one on one with instructors once a year to review one productive and one receptive assessment in preparation for follow up with Site Coordinator: store assessments in the internal repository.

9. On occasion, team-teach, give demonstration lessons, or lead an instructor’s class to free the instructor to undertake language assessments (not to carry out assessments in place of the classroom instructor or cover for instructors when absent).

10. Assist instructors to orient new students to PBLA and help them catch up with any section of their Language Companion after the initial start-up of classes.

11. Support instructors in developing course content for their level, respecting copyright laws.

12. As requested, assist instructors with onboarding and managing a variety of technologies.

PROGRAM SUPPORT

13. Communicate (face to face or virtually/digitally) with Site Coordinator and the Academic Director, as needed, keeping them informed about the progress in each session as well as any needs or concerns that arise.

14. Participate in instructors’ evaluation process by completing the PBLA Lead Feedback form as requested by the Site Coordinator.

15. Assist Site Coordinator with concerns and questions about student placement, and/or student progression.

16. Administer in-house tests to students when approved by the Site Coordinator.

17. Identify and report trends, challenges and needs regarding CLBs, TBLT, PBLA, etc., and advise Site Coordinator on needed supports such as PD or resources.

18. Perform other duties as required by Site Coordinators, Academic Director, or Program Manager.

PROFESSIONALISM

19. Keep current with developments in the ESL teaching profession, including Literacy and Portfolio Based Languages Assessments (PBLA).

20. Attend internal and external meetings with other PBLA Lead Instructors as required.

21. Collaborate with other PBLA Lead Instructors and staff as needed.

22. Complete a self-assessment using the annual PBLA Practice Review Framework.

23. Ensure workspaces are clean and tidy at the end of each working shift.

24. Work amicably as a team member: sharing workspaces, participating in and contributing to materials exchange, staff meetings and professional development.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in education, Alberta teaching certificate is preferred.
Related bachelor’s degree, with:
o 1-2 years of relevant ESL/EAL teaching experience, or

o TESL Canada certification.

PBLA Lead certified or comply with the PBLA Lead Instructor/Instructor Prior Learning Assessment Review (PLAR) as described by the PBLA Practice Guidelines.
In-house Certificate of PBLA Training.
Minimum of 32 weeks using PBLA successfully in the classroom.
Language Proficiency Requirements, if required:
o TOEFL iBT – 92 or more with a minimum of 22 in each skill.

o IELTS General or Academic –7.0 overall score with a minimum of 6.5 in each skill; or,

o CELPIP General – 10 in each skill.

  • Extensive experience working with ESL learners at various levels.
  • Strong use of current PBLA practices.
  • Demonstrated capability in developing curricula.
  • Proven skills in leadership, collegiality, problem solving, mentoring.
  • Effective computer skills and knowledge incorporating technology in the ESL classroom.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications and applicable online platforms.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills; and,
  • Ability to work independently with solid time management and organizational skills.
