February 24- Integrating Artificial Intelligence-Powered Tools in English Language Teaching
February 24, 2023
PD 5:00 - 6:00 MST
Presenter: Dr. Kent Lee
PD summary: Recent advances in tools powered by artificial intelligence
(AI) and the increasing accessibility of these tools have generated much excitement and
concern among educators. In the area of English language teaching (ELT), open-access
AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT) can automate tasks such as natural language generation,
conversation simulation, feedback provision, and evaluation to an extent that may
challenge instructors to reflect on and reconsider their current ELT practices. The
purpose of this PD session is to (a) provide a brief overview of the current state of using
AI tools in ELT, (b) explore some of the affordances and limitations of using ChatGPT for
ELT, and (c) promote discussions on the potential benefits and challenges of integrating
AI tools in ELT classrooms. Participants are encouraged to bring a computing device
(laptop, tablet, mobile phone) with internet access to maximize their learning.
Presenter Bio: Kent Lee is an assistant professor in the Teaching English as Second
