January 28 - Designing Pre-Task Grammar Activities: Moving Beyond the Traditional

January 28, 2022

PD 5:00 - 6:00 MST | Online Event

Dr. Leila Ranta and Dr. Majid Nikouee

It is now well accepted that grammar instruction has an important role to play in

ESL instruction, even when a task-based approach is used. The question that arises

is what kind of grammar activity to plan for. According to language learning theory,

written grammar exercises cannot possibly enable learners to immediately use new

grammatical knowledge in a communicative speaking task. What is needed are

practice activities that are similar in some way to real-world language use so that

learning is transferable. In this presentation, we will highlight the characteristics of

effective pre-task grammar practice and then present results from a recent

experimental study that illustrate the benefits of moving beyond traditional fill-in-

the-blank exercises.
