CLB Writing Assessment: How does Grammar
Affect Communicative Competence

Agenda:

CLB Writing Assessment: How does Grammar Affect Communicative Competence at CLB 3 and CLB 5?

Have you ever wondered how to interpret the descriptors in the CLB 2012? Based on examples of some grammatical structures produced by ten CLB 3 and ten CLB 5 learners in response to tasks at their respective levels, we will discuss the following two questions: What kinds of grammatical errors might impede communication? What might “developing control” or “good control of simple structures” and “difficulty with complex structures” look like at these two levels?

Sabine Ricioppo, M.Ed. (TESL), has been working in the field of adult English language teaching and assessment since 2009. She is a test developer and consultant for CCLB and certified to administer a variety of CLB assessment tools. As a doctoral student in Measurement, Evaluation and Data Science, she is investigating the use of syntactic structures at different levels of proficiency.
