An Integrated Approach to Teaching ESL and EWP
This project created an integrated approach to teaching ESL and English in the Workplace (EWP) using the Human Resource Skills Development Canada Essential Skills framework (ES), the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) and intercultural competence (IC).
Project activities included developing a needs assessment report with results from interviews with seven experienced professionals involved in one or more of the following practices: ESL, EWP, ES and Literacy instruction or program coordination.
A two day workshop was developed; day 1 focused on instructors and coordinators with little or no experience in any of the 3 areas of practice (ESL, ES, EWP/IC). Day 2 workshop was targeted at participants with more experience in one or more of the 3 areas of practice. Workshops included hands-on activities to develop lessons using the integrated approach to instruction. Participants could sign up for 1 or 2 days. Sessions were delivered in Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Red Deer. Average participant rating of the workshops was high, 91.2% based on a compilation of 3 post-workshop survey items.
