Bridging Communication and Culture for Nursing (PNDIEN)

This curriculum is based on the communication, reading and writing demands placed on nurses, as identified by the findings of the Benchmarking the English Language Demands of the Nursing Profession Across Canada project. It is designed to meet the CLB 9 Listening objectives, CLB 8 Speaking and Reading objectives, and CLB 7/8 Writing objectives. The focus of the listening/speaking curriculum is to enhance listening comprehension as well as speaking skills, enabling learners to communicate clearly and effectively, in both social and professional capacities, as LPNs. The listening/speaking course strengthens the receptive and productive skills necessary for communication with clients and with fellow professionals in a healthcare setting. Grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation are developed as learners engage in interactive activities mirroring the communicative acts that take place in the workplace. The curriculum emphasizes the language knowledge and communication skills the learners will need to apply once the course is completed and they are working in a Canadian healthcare context. The focus of the Reading curriculum is to enhance reading comprehension and speed, enabling learners to complete the reading tasks they will face, first as students of nursing and later as LPNs in a healthcare setting. The focus of the Writing curriculum is to enhance students’ abilities to communicate effectively, accurately and fluently in writing, enabling them to complete the writing tasks they will face, both as students of nursing and as LPNs in a healthcare setting. The curriculums each include general learning outcomes, specific learning outcomes, sample texts and tasks, and performance indicators which describe specifically what a student need to do in order to successfully complete a task. Also, each curriculum is accompanied by an Implementation Guide which includes suggested resources for each SLO and (in the case of the writing and speaking/listening curriculums) handouts. This curriculum is accompanied by the “Case Study Files,” which includes a Learner Guide (with 9 case studies, nursing care plans, sample charting, etc.) and an Instructor Guide (with detailed suggestions for interactive activities and resources related to each of the 9 case studies).
