Learning for LIFE: An ESL Literacy Curriculum Framework

Learning for LIFE: An ESL Literacy Curriculum Framework is a resource designed for practitioners in the field of adult ESL literacy in Alberta. This resource addresses curriculum development from both programming and instructional perspectives, and will help you develop an ESL literacy curriculum tailored to your particular programming context. Learning for LIFE: An ESL Literacy Curriculum Framework outlines a process for curriculum development in five stages:

•Stage 1: Understand Needs

• Stage 2: Determine Focus

• Stage 3: Set Learning Outcomes

• Stage 4: Integrate Assessment

• Stage 5: Demonstrate Accountability

In stage 3, learning outcomes are provided in four strands: reading, writing, literacy strategies and habits of mind (the non-literacy skills that contribute to success in Albertan contexts). The reading, writing and literacy strategy outcomes align with the descriptors of literacy development provided in Canadian Language Benchmarks 2000: ESL for Literacy Learners.

Stage 4 outlines a model of assessment for three purposes: assessment for learning, assessment as learning, and assessment of learning. Portfolio-based assessment is recommended, and four types of portfolios are described: classroom, collaborative learning, showcase, and evaluation portfolios.

In addition, the framework provides guiding principles and considerations for developing a curriculum in four main Albertan ESL literacy program contexts:

• Community orientation and participation ESL literacy

• Family ESL literacy

• Employment ESL literacy

• Educational preparation ESL literacy Two appendices are also included in the framework:

• Appendix A: Recommendations for Integrating Numeracy

• Appendix B: Recommendations for Integrating Technology
