Literacy Enhancement for Senior Immigrant Women
This curriculum manual was designed for an Arts and Crafts group comprised of senior immigrant women. The participants are mostly relative newcomers to Canada. Many have limited language and literacy skills, which leads to isolation and even depression. Due to physical limitations, limited English, responsibilities for their children and grandchildren in the home and lack of confidence, these women are often not comfortable joining mainstream support and activity groups geared to seniors. As they make connections with other senior women from different social and cultural backgrounds, they will become more comfortable integrating into the larger community. By overcoming language deficiencies, they will have the confidence and skills required to maintain / gain independence.
